I live in a 100+ year old house on the Canadian prairies ( no trees). In our county there is a large number of coal deposits. My husband is the fourth generation to live on this farm. We now use natural gas. Wind provided lights here and there were batteries on benches in the basement. Thank you for putting this content out there for me to learn and appreciate.

We're being asked to believe that a one-armed ill man could pull off the Ripper murders? This theory addresses almost no details of the actual murders and stretches credibility. Anyone who says they know who the suspect is automatically, as Tom Westcott explains, is no good as a researcher because the theory takes precedence over the facts, and the writer no longer makes room for a different suspect.

l look forward to reading your book with great interest. l trust that, unlike other investigators of this crime you do not consider the police of the day to have been incompetent as well as poorly equipped. They were not. Hyams was a suspect but, as would be explained in the official police record, he was dismissed as one. l hope your book will explain the following. 1) Why did he remove body organs and take them from the scene? 2) How did he have the anatomical knowledge and skill to find and remove them in the dark? 3) What was his use for those particular organs and not others? 4) Why were his crimes confined to so small an area, or were they? Nobody but me seems to have considered that this killer may have been a medical student. l will, however, buy your book. Well done.

Every few years some new person comes out with their theory on who Jack the Ripper really was. Its always the next best thing and they are unwaveringly certain. The truth is they dont know beyond making wild assumptions (although they will tell you they are fact based) and best guessed hypotheses. The crimes happened 135 years ago. We will never know who Jack the Ripper really was.

Fascinating about wood ash and cold water. I have been minimizing laundry loads drastically for some time and prefer to hang-dry all small garments instead of using a dryer. So ... commercial soap was developed ... why again? Perhaps because the timber industry was an enormous industry in-the-making, although the removal of trees devastated the environments everywhere, and TPTB did not want people messing with future profits, trees. Removing people from nature also started a mind set of dependency on commercial products, becoming consumers, and decreasing ancient knowledge such as making wood ash from trees. I bet, too, people who saw or believed in gnomes and fairies, who lived in forests, were then considered witches if they still interacted with trees ...

Now they have bleach to be hygienic but it ruins colored clothes and some of us are highly allergic to it.

I do wish she would have put out cookbooks and household hints for each of the Farm series she did. They would have been great reads and practical recipes.

Ruth is inspiring in so many ways. Not only does she inspire with her love and understanding of history, but she is also inspiring me as a mother. I've just watched Edwardian Farm and am finishing up Victorian Farm; and to see her interactions with her daughter inspires me to better interactions with my own daughter of similar age. Ruth Goodman is just the best!
